Pouring Vessel (2015)
I was tasked to design a ‘vessel that pours’ for my silversmithing module in first year of the BA program of Contemporary Applied Arts at Ulster University in 2015.
I wanted to experiment with smithing fundamentals by hammer folding edges of copper sheet, rolling that, then hand riveting the cylinder shut, soldering a copper base and a patina to blacken to exterior.
The result was a vessel that was heavy to hold and reminded me of the old naval rivets of Belfast’s ‘Samson & Goliath’ Cranes.
